An impact wrench is also known as air wrench, air gun, as well as rattle gun. It is a socket wrench power tool designed to deliver high torque output with minimal exertion by the user, by storing energy in a rotating mass, then delivering it suddenly to the output shaft. Compressed air is the most common power source, although electric or hydraulic power is also used. Cordless electric devices are becoming very popular nowadays.
Impact wrenches are one of the most commonly used air tools and are found in virtually every mechanic’s shop. As its name suggests, an impact wrench works in the same manner, through the principle of impact. Impact wrenches are available in all sizes and in several styles, depending on the application. Impact wrenches are available in every standard socket wrench drive size, from small 1/4" drive tools for small assembly and disassembly, up to 3.5" and larger square drives for major construction. It is very important to be careful when tightening a nut or bolt with an impact wrench. Cross threading can occur very easily. To prevent such problems, always be sure to hand-tighten every nut or bolt before using the impact wrench. Special accessories are required to use impact wrenches. Also, an impact wrench requires special sockets that are designed to withstand the high torque applied by the wrench. An impact wrench also requires a few special accessories. An air-powered impact wrench runs off of an air compressor with a tank – the air compressor should have at least a 10 gallon tank and be able to generate at least 3hp. Also, an impact wrench requires special sockets that are designed to withstand the high torque applied by the wrench. Although using an impact wrench requires a certain degree of expertise, it certainly makes the job easier, by cutting down on the amount of work and time required to get the job done. An impact wrench can even make changing a flat tire easier: some manufacturers make portable impact wrenches that plug into the cigarette lighter of your car and come with a variety of sockets to fit any size lug nut!
